Responsibilities Incumbent assists provider staff of primary care clinic, in most aspects of health care to clinic population. Incumbent responsible for support to medical assistant staff and daily problem solving of clinic operations.
Interview patients regarding health problems. Take vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, and pulse, etc. Does hemoglobin, blood sugars, urine tests per clinic protocols, but also laboratory operations. Lab duties include phlebotomy, processing and labeling blood, urine, pap, and other specimens, as well as appropriately completing the specimens' requisitions and sending those specimens to the appropriate laboratories. Explain health education materials with written and video health education materials specific to patients' clinical need(s) i.e.; diabetes, ob/gyn, family planning, safety, domestic violence, HIV, etc. Assist in medical emergencies, including starting IVs, setting up oxygen mask, monitoring pulse oximetry. Accurately record services provided in patients chart. Perform in-clinic procedures, such as visual acuity, audiometry, etc. Provides immunizations, PPD placements and readings, breathing treatments, oral, injectable and topical medications as ordered by providers and per protocol. Performs various types of wound care to include packing under direction of provider. Assist with examinations and translate for providers as needed. Set up rooms for patients and specialists when necessary. Flexibility to float to other clinical sites. Provide contraceptive counseling according to policy and procedures. Provide pregnancy counseling according to policy and procedures. Serve as resource for other medical assistants any questions regarding patient care procedures. Help monitor clinic flow and coordinate with provider, nursing and front desk staff. Train medical assistants and volunteer staff in use of electronic medical record. Communicate with nursing supervisor and disseminate information to medical assistant staff. Perform INH counseling, emergency contraception, and wound visits. Assist in assigning medical assistants to providers at the beginning of clinic sessions, and help schedule breaks and lunches. Work with security and front desk staff to assist patients with walk-in medical or nursing questions.
Oversee overall inventory of supplies and forms as needed to function on a day to day basis. Communicate needs to CMA responsible for clinical stock. Supervise the stocking of rooms with supplies and speculums. Maintain clean working area and patients' rooms. Assist in checking the emergency crash carts at all sites. Assist in maintenance of vaccinations, checking the refrigeration and transport medium of vaccines, and managing the vaccine inventory, including ordering vaccines. Collect and process paperwork and blood samples as requested by provider. Process screening tests such as hematocrits, RUA's, card pregnancy test, FIT, etc., including documentation of results. Process samples and paperwork for pap smears, GC cultures and Chlamydia cultures. Prepare urine specimens for microscopic analysis. Send lab specimens to the appropriate lab with proper reimbursement information and correct specimen processing per specifications of each individual laboratory. Perform these functions when floating to smaller sites and serving as lab back-up at Simms/Mann. Involved in interviewing, hiring and training of new staff for Nursing Department. Responsible for time sheet correction and approvals. Responsible for scheduling and approving time off for employees Responsible for performance evaluations. Responsible with Qualifications Two years' experience in providing primary care in pediatric setting. Working knowledge of medical terminology, process and procedures, along with the ability to other clinic staff, and in patients via health education. Effective oral and written bilingual English/Spanish communication skills. Ability to follow through on assignments, while helping to facilitate the organization, prioritization, and completion of all clinic tasks through collaboration with other clinic staff. Interpersonal skills to deal with patients, staff and volunteers of diverse educational, economic and cultural backgrounds. Ability to pass Basic Health Worker course and obtain certificate. Ability to perform phlebotomy and basic lab procedures such as pregnancy tests, UA, etc. Ability to take direction from RN and medical providers and ability to work collaboratively with all other staff members. Ability to keep lab procedures and results logs. Skill in administering injections and immunizations. Current BCLS/CPR card and ability to assist in a medical emergency. Ability to prioritize medical problems within scope of job responsibilities. Knowledge of clinic policies and procedures and ability to follow same. Ability to work in busy setting with conflicting demands. Skill at working independently and prioritizing assignments to complete work in a timely manner. Knowledge of health education, public health, and medical terminology.
